The Venue

The International Conference on Mediterranean Diet and Gastronomy 2018 will be held at the Main Auditorium of The University of Évora (Évora, Portugal).

The University of Évora was the second public institution of higher education to be founded in Portugal, in 1559. The campus is comprised of buildings of high patrimonial values that spread from the heart of the city to as far as 12km from the city walls.

After being closed in the 18th century, the university reopened in 1979. At the present time, it is organized into four schools related to the scientific fields of Arts, Social Sciences, Technology Sciences and Health.

The city

Évora is a well-preserved medieval town located at the south-central part of Portugal, in the Alentejo region, at 130km from the capital city Lisbon. The historical centre is, since 1986, a UNESCO World Heritage site and it is also a member of the Most Ancient European Towns Network.

Partially enclosed by walls, Évora offers a distinctive heritage dating from various historical periods, including a Roman Temple, a Gothic Cathedral and Cloisters, a picturesque town square, among others.

The outskirts of the city combine the peaceful Alentejo landscape with its never-ending fields, contrasting with several prehistoric structures, cromlechs and menhir stones. Apart from its historic and distinctive heritage, Évora is a lively University town, with several green places, gardens and some nature trails which can be explored on foot or by bike.

The individuality of the Alentejo cuisine is influenced by the secular famers tradition and is made with natural ingredients from the land. In an Alentejo’s table you will find delicious wines, olives and olive oils, sheep's cheese, Alentejo bread, and the famous black pork.
